Captain Sailnator explains: “With beating you reach an upwind destination. Because you can’t sail straight towards it, you have to take a zigzag route. Close-hauled, tack, close-hauled, and so on till you reach the destination!” Jenny and Tom have now to show that they understood the exercise.

Jenny appears on course close-hauled. She recognises, that she will not reach the buoy on this course. So she calls the command: “Ready for tacking?” Tom approves: “Ready!” And Jenny starts the tack by calling: “Tacking!” Now she heads Captain Sailnator’s powerboat. So they have to tack again.

The commands are the same. This tack works perfectly as well and Jenny stays on close-hauled afterwards to lose no height by bearing away unnecessarily. But she still would not reach the buoy on this course either. Because of that she tacks another time and reaches the buoy by sailing close to it.

Perfect! Captain Sailnator is satisfied. He picks up the buoy and looks forward to closing time! He rushes back to the harbour. On the jetty Harbourmaster Peter is waiting. He recognises that Captain Sailnator is driving too fast to stop early enough. The boat crashes into the jetty and the buoy flies directly in Peter’s arms. Now Peter is told to pass the dock line but it falls into the water by accident. Captain Sailnator drifts away and now closing time moves further into the distance.
